VMA Auditions

JBHS VMA Audition Requirements

  1. Complete Vocal Music Application.
  2. Complete Dance Audition.
  3. Complete Vocal Audition.
  4. Complete Ear Test.

How to prepare for your Choir Auditions

  1. Complete the online choir application during the week of workshops.
  2. If you are not currently enrolled in choir at Burroughs, Jordan or Luther, please fill out the top portion of the teacher evaluation forms and have them filled out by each of your current teachers. Teachers must return them to Mr. Jennings .
  3. Attend dance workshops, vocal workshops and ear testing BEFORE your audition.
  4. Plan on being ready for your audition one hour BEFORE your audition time.
  5. “Coachability” is one part of your audition. This is how well you take, follow and improve from coaching directions.

Dance Auditions

  1. Be prepared to audition the required choreography that you will learn at the workshops.
  2. You will be auditioning 4 people at a time. Make sure you rehearse with your group prior to your audition.
  3. Dress in dance clothing, but follow school dress code.
  4. Have your hair pulled back off of your face.

Vocal Auditions

  1. Choose audition song (pop songs may not be the best choice to show your vocal range.
    Consider songs from musical theater, classical, jazz, ballads or folk music.)
  2. Choose desired audition time on application. You will be assigned to an audition time during workshops.
  3. Be prepared for your auditions. Dress appropriately, speak clearly and be confident.
  4. Be prepared to state your first and last name, your grade in the fall, your voice part and the name of the song you are going to sing.
  5. Be prepared to sing the first verse to “America” from memory.

* Students who reside outside of the Burroughs area are not automatically qualified for placement at Burroughs if they are accepted into a Burroughs choir. Proper paperwork must be approved by the BUSD Pupil Services.
