Parent-Student Meeting - May 29, 2007
WELCOME
Debbie and Kieth Stevens
& Debbie Wade, VMA Booster Club Co-Presidents - Introductions and welcome.
Emilio Urioste, Jr.,
Principal - Joining choir is like joining a new family, the more you join in
and help out, the more it will enhance the overall choir experience for both
you and your child.
Brendan Jennings, Choir Director - Welcome to both new and returning students. Thank you to all who made his first year such a success. This next year should be just as great, if not better.

EVENTS
Debbie Stevens spoke of
the variety of events that occur in choir. Performances (BOB-Burroughs on
Broadway, Holiday Spectacular, POP Show, Spring Concert), Competitions,
Fundraisers, Rehearsals...before school even starts, after school, Pali
Mountain camp in October. Choir provides your child with self-confidence,
self-esteem and a familiar face in every classroom, hallway, quad, etc.
This is especially helpful for freshman, as by the time school starts they
have already have been rehearsing with their choir.
BOOSTER MEETINGS
Booster meetings
generally occur the first Tuesday of the month (See schedule of
events/calendar for specific dates). All parents are urged to attend.
Debbie Wade spoke of how this is an excellent way to get to know the parents
of the kids your kids are hanging out with. Booster meetings are not just
for those parents who want to volunteer, but it is a great way for all
parents to find out what is happening in choir.
VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS
Bonnie Popp/Chris DeMore
spoke on volunteer opportunities. There are jobs for all personalities and
skill levels for both moms and dads. Fill out the yellow volunteer form in
your packet and make sure Bonnie has your e-mail address. You can e-mail
her at bonnie.popp@disney.com.
CODE OF CONDUCT:
Kieth Stevens addressed
the importance of rules and the consequences for breaking them. The rules
for school are also enforced in choir. Kieth also reiterated the need for
volunteers and put a call out for all fathers who work in the studios
(video, sound, set building, etc.) or are good with handyman type stuff. We
have a good crew of volunteers here, but can always use more. E-mail Kieth
@ garykfnk@aol.com or call him @ (213)
999-3360.
MONTHLY PAYMENT PLAN
Brendan Jennings and
M’Lisa MacLaren spoke of the new payment plan that has been created to make
sure that the VMA is not in a position where we cannot pay our bills. Last
year a parent had to loan the VMA $40,000, due to non-paying choir
students. New deadlines have been set for payment dates and these deadlines
will be enforced. For example if you are not paid up to date by July 9th
with the 2nd payment, then you will be dropped from choir.
The money you pay to
choir is refundable as long as your child has not incurred any costs. Do
not let this stop you from paying your choir account. If you move or drop
choir before expenses are paid (ie costume ordered, plane ticket bought,
etc.), you will be refunded the money you have paid.
Also, for Sound Waves
(girls) and Decibelles there will be a dress sale where pre-owned costumes
will be available for purchase to save on your expenses (depending on size
and availability).
GOLDEN NOTE:
To make paying for choir
easier, Carol Ordelheide (golden.note@yahoo.com)
spoke on the Golden Note program. A booklet is in your choir packet.
Golden Note is a program where your choir student can sell advertisement
that will be placed in both the Holiday Spectacular Program and the Pop Show
Program (over 5000 people attend Pop Show). Fifty percent of the
advertisment fee will go directly to your child’s choir account. Last year
$28K in Golden Notes were sold, with $14K going directly to students’
accounts. Also, you can check with your choir VP for a list of Golden Note
sponsors who were not approached this past year for advertisements. Golden
Note Passes are also available for purchase at $100 each allowing free
admission to a majority of choir performances. $25 of each pass goes to
your child’s choir account.
FUNDRAISING
Martha Ferguson,
fundraising chair, also identified ways you or your child can earn money for
their choir expenses. We have a variety of fundraisers. Those like the
wrapping paper sale in September and Sees Candy earn a 40% return directly
to your child’s account. Other fundraisers like the car wash and rummage
sale earn money for the choir in general to help offset expenses for
everyone. Ideas for new fundraisers are always welcome and can be e-mailed
to Martha at otmuse@sbcglobal.net.
